About Digital Kindred
A small editorial desk in Louisville, Kentucky, writing plainly about how films actually get made.
Why this site exists
Digital Kindred Inc. publishes craft guides for people who are somewhere between owning a camera and knowing what to do with it. Most of us learned filmmaking the slow way — on borrowed equipment, in rooms that were never meant to be sets, discovering on the third project what somebody could have explained in an afternoon. This site is the explanation we wish we had been handed.
We write about the parts of the job that decide whether a piece of footage is usable: what to prepare before a shoot day, how the camera controls trade against one another, where to put people in the frame, how to shape light with what is already in the room, how to record dialogue that survives an edit, and how to shoot so the timeline has options.
How we write
- Plain language first. Technical terms get defined the first time they appear, and we avoid jargon when an ordinary word will do.
- Craft over kit. We are far more interested in what a decision does to a frame than in which brand made the device.
- Honest limits. Where something depends on your camera, your room or your crew, we say so instead of promising a result.
- General information. Our articles are educational. They are not personalised technical advice for your particular production.
What we do not do
We do not run paid placements dressed up as editorial, we do not publish invented statistics or testimonials, and we do not make claims about outcomes we cannot support. If an article ever involves a commercial relationship, it will say so in plain sight at the top of the page.
